The Sonic Electro Acoustic System comprises the bridge pickup, internal pre amp and power supply.
At the heart of the system is a hand built twin transducer bridge. The standard bridge is manufactured in two parts enabling the top half to be replaced should you wish to change the set up, or if it becomes damaged. The lower section contains two small, very low mass ceramic transducers set above each bridge foot on which the upper bridge piece sits. This configuration, and traditional bridge design, captures the natural dynamics and balance of the instrument both from the strings and the body.
The transducers are internally connected to a carefully designed, ultra high impedance, discrete class A pre-amp. The pre-amp is powered by a standard 9V PP3 battery mounted in an easily accessible spring loaded drawer below the chinrest. This mounting position eliminates the feel of the additional mass. Many Electric Violins use lower voltage batteries or capacitors, these seriously compromises the preamp headroom and therefore the dynamic range of the instrument.
A standard ¼” jack socket is mounted in the internally reinforced rib of the left hand lower bout.
A "Delux" tranducer bridge is also available for violin and viola; this was developed for the Sonic Heritage range where the acoustic performance is very much a part of the appeal of the instrument. The transducer is permanently assembled as one piece to reduce the foot width to that of a standard acoustic bridge. This transducer is available as an option on all other models for an additional £60. The standard Cello and Bass bridges are both one piece designs.
The Sonic Attack is based around a good quality handcrafted student violin. They are hand built by small specialist teams from raw material to finished instrument, rather than the series production manufacturing of lesser instruments.
They use the traditional combination of spruce top plates and figured two piece maple backs with inlaid purfling, maple ribs and scrolls, ebony fingerboards, pegs and enpins and are fitted with an integral 4 way adjustable metal tailpiece.
The deep colours selected for the finish enhance the natural wood grains and each instrument is hand polished to finish. All these violins have their own unique character.
The standard set up comes with D'Addario Helicore strings - these are steel rope core strings and give excellent results on these violins. You may specify your own strings at cost if preferred.
These instruments have been selected because the quality exceeds that of factory produced European violins with price tags five times higher.
The Sonic Attacks are supplied as standard with a lightweight oblong case featuring a full length pocket, large internal compartment, neck strap, padded cloth and straps. Also included is a composite bow with ebony frog.
The Sonic Classic has become the most popular instrument in the Sonic Violins range. This instrument suits those players looking for a high quality rewarding instrument for solo acoustic performance as well as for amplified use. It wont break the bank or feel too vunerable sat in a pub or at the side of a stage.
These violins are carefully specified to our partner workshop in Shanghai. They are made with quality tonewoods, single piece backs and spirit varnished to give a durable yet tactile feel.
Violins from stock as 4 & 5 string and Octave 5 String

The Sonic Classic is supplied in a lightweight oblong case - you may upgrade this case if required, contact us for options and prices.
The Sonic Heritage is made in the workshop of Xueping Hu. They are fine Italian copies avaiable in Stradivari or Guarneri design for violins and Guadagnini or Maggini designs for viola. Xueping was awarded the certificate of merit for tone at the Violin Society of America 2006. These instruments are produced with conservatoire and professional players in mind and possess a detailed and sensitive tone.
The tonewoods used are carefully selected; the spruce is from the Dolomite region of the Italian Alps and the European maple from Bosnia. The wood is naturally dried for 4 years before being placed in a traditional drying room.
The oil varnishing on these instruments has been specifically developed to resemble that of the Old Italian instruments from the early 18th century.
The Sonic Heritage Series are among the finest examples of modern violin making available today and represent excellent value at this level. These instrument find favour with those looking for the ultimate amplified sound as well as superb acoustic tone and projection. As acoustic instruments they fit comfortably into orchestral and conservatoir settings.
The electro acoustic model is fitted with the "Delux" transducer bridge
The Sonic Classic Mandolin follows the same principle that has been so successful with the Sonic Violin range. The transducer element is the same ultra low mass ceramic used in the violin bridge but with four elements positioned under each pair of strings presenting a balanced signal to the matched pre amp which is built into the end pin ¼” jack connector.
The Sonic Classic mandolin is supplied by Eastman Instruments and is their 504 A Style oval hole model. This instrument is also available as F-style body and or with F holes.
The system can be also fitted to your own instrument – Cost £495
The Sonic Classic Five string is made to the the same material specification as the 4 string Sonic Classic in our partner workshop in Shanghai.
The body is based on a 14½“ "long Strad" pattern but with the same string playing length. The ribs are deeper at 34mm. The fingerboard is 28mm wide at the nut to accomodate the extra string, maintaining a typical string spacing of 5.5mm and a comfortable neck feel.
These instruments can also be built with Octave Strings.
I was approached by Glyn Jones in 2013 to help develop his new concept for a five string violin. I had been searching for a high grade five string so took this opportunity to work with Glyn and produce a bespoke body design using Chladni Plate Tuning techniques.
After many iterations I now believe that this instrument gives players an instrument that performs across both the violin and viola ranges without compromise.
The body design is reworked from a 1585 Lira de Braccia by Gasparo Da salo. The high arching, higher ribs and wide bouts increase the body volume to that of a small viola. The developed plate tuning and unique bass bar design collaborate to produce a powerful resonance and tone from the low C right up to the dusty second octave on the E.
These instruments are all individual and are usually made to order – call to discuss timescales and requirements.

The standard Sub Sonic is an Octave ( Baritone ) violin built on a 14½" Viola body and fitted with Supersensitive Sensicore strings tuned one octave down on standard treble tuning. The body is just ½” longer than a standard violin which makes the scale length almost identical to a standard violin.
The Sonic Chin Cello is an Octave Viola built on the same 14½" body but strung a fifth down at ADGC - the same as a Cello. You may swap between tunings so no need to stress over which is most suitable.
These instrument produce fantastically rich tones through the systems high power pre amp circuit. Whilst you cannot just pick one up and play your favourite reel at full tilt straight away, within a few days this instrument will become an indispensable extension to your playing repertoire. The Sonic Octave range are ideal for bands with a “cluttered” line up of mid range instruments all trying to fit into a small acoustic space.
The Sub Sonic works surprising well acoustically - the ChinCello doesn't!
Full size octave violas up to 16" can also be built to order + £50
5 String Octave Violins or Violas are available within the Sonic Classic range.
These instruments are supplied in a lightweight oblong case with a composite viola bow.
The Sonic Cello are built to order, I can discuss and supply a range of instruments within these budgets to suit you, all supplied from my UK distributors. The Sonic Classic Cellois most popular with gigging musicians and I have a Demo model available at all times.
The system is the same as described for the violins but the bridge transducer is in one piece the same as the Delux violin transducer.
It is also possible to string the Cello as a Double Bass or Octave Cello either for extended Cello work or for bass players who are weary of lugging around 3/4 size basses.
