The PICK-UP SYSTEM

The Sonic Electro Acoustic System includes the bridge pickup, internal pre amp and power supply.

At the heart of the system is a hand built twin transducer bridge. The bridge is manufactured in two pieces enabling the standard top half to be replaced should you wish to try a different set up, or if it becomes damaged. The lower section contains two small, very low mass transducers set above each bridge foot on which the upper bridge piece sits. This "Bi Polar" configuration, and traditional bridge design, captures the natural dynamics of the instrument both from the strings and the body.

The transducers are internally connected to a carefully designed, very high impedance, matched pre-amp circuit. All instruments built from 2011 also include a High Pass Filter (HPF) circuit that reduces unwanted low frequencies that can occur through handling and bow thump. The pre-amp is powered by a standard 9V PP3 battery, which is mounted in an easily accessible spring loaded drawer below the chinrest. This unique mounting position eliminates the weight of the battery from the natural balance of the instrument. The battery drawer fits snugly between the bottle screws of the chinrest. Many electric makers use 3v Coin cells to avoid weight distribution problems; however this compromises the headroom of the pre amp circuit and thus limits the dynamics of the instrument. Also, try finding a replacement “CR123ABC” cell at a late night festival when your battery dies!

A standard ¼” jack socket is mounted in the left hand bout which has additional rib bracing extending from the corner block and over the linings to withstand any loads imposed by the connecting lead being inadvertently pulled.

The instrument below is shown with the highly rated Planet Waves Circuit Breaker Cable Connected. A right angle jack is always recommended to avoid cable strain.
